Origin of salts and alkali carbonates in the Udachnaya East kimberlite: Insights from petrography of kimberlite phases and their carbonate and evaporite xenoliths
Two varieties of pyroclastic kimberlite and coherent kimberlite comprise the Udachnaya East pipe. The pyroclastic kimberlites belong to the Fort-a-la-Corne type. We find and describe epigenetic halite and evaporite xenoliths parent to the exotic salt minerals at Udachnaya. Crustal xenoliths partially control the mineralogy of the host kimberlite. The model of the “dry” Na and Cl-rich primary kimberlite melt is invalidated.
