Sheeting joints are curved, opening mode fractures. Sheeting joints form near, and subparallel to, the topographic surface. Erosion of overburden, by itself, does not adequately explain sheeting joints. Topography perturbs tectonic and gravitational stresses to help open sheeting joints. Groundwater pressure also helps open sheeting joints.
