The Sedimentary Differences of the Middle Jurassic Xishanyao Formation between Santanghu Area and Turpan-Hami Area and Their Constraint on the Uplifting of the Bogda Mountain

摘要

Based on previous researches and field survey, this paper made an integrated comparative analysis of the stratigraphy, sedi- mentary geology, provenances and paleocurrents of the Middle Jurassic Xishanyao Formation between Santanghu area and Turpan- Hami area across the Bogda Mountain as well as their constraint on the uplifting of the Bogda Mountain. The results indicate that the Xishanyao Formation in Santanghu area and in Turpan-Hami area show a high consistency in such aspects as stratigraphy, lithological association, sedimentary facies and bottom or top stratigraphic contacts. 1 The stratigraphic successions of the Xishanyao Formation in these two areas display consistent sedimentary cycles of upward fining and thinning. The bottom cycle is mainly coarser grained sediments composed mostly of grayish sandstone or pebbled sandstone, and the sediments in the middle part of the Xishanyao Formation is predominately fine grained deposits of grayish mudstone and siltstone commonly with coal seam. Upwards, sediments of this formation become chiefly fine grained and grayish pebbled sandstone, muddy siltstone interbedded with tuffaceous mudstone and thinner interclations of coal seam. However, in the top part of the Xishanyao Formation in both areas there appear coarser-grained sediments of oxidation colors. 2 Sedimentary facies of the Xishanyao Formation in these two areas consist of fan-delta, braided river-delta or meandering river delta in the lower part, and littoral and shallow lake facies or swamp deposits in the middle and top parts. 3 Reconstructed paleoclimate suggests that the Xishanyao Formation in these two areas was deposited in a warm and moist climate environment, as evidenced by lots of vegetation fossils and regional correlative carbonaceous mudstone and coal seam. 4 The Xishanyao Formation is in angular unconformity contact with the overlying Middle Jurassic Toutun Formation in Santanghu area and in parallel unconformity contact with the overlying Middle Jurassic Sanjianfang Formation in the north part of Turpan-Hami area. The authors hold that both Santanghu and Turpan-Hami areas were located within an identical basin and yielded the lower and middle part deposits of the Shanxiyao Formation. However, The provenances and paleocurrents of the upper Xishanyao Formation in the northern Turpan-Hami area were changed. Metamorphic rock cuttings cannot be found in clastic sediments composition of the southern Jueluotageshan, and the heavy mineral composition of Xishanyao Formation is similar to that of Bogda area in the north part. In addition, the origin of the paleocurrent was from the north. It can thus be concluded that the Bogda Mountain possibly experienced uplifting at the late stage of the deposition of Xishanyao Formation, which divided Turpan-Hami and Santanghu into two disconnected basins. These two basins displayed a marked difference in sedimentary evolution and geological characteristics after the deposition of Shanxiyao Formation.
