The Santanghu Basin is one of low-rank coal-bearing basins which have become the hotspot of coal bed methane exploration areas. Based on the analyses and discussions of geologic characteristics of this area, such as developmental characteristics of coal, coal evolution characteristics, coal bed methane content, micropetrological unit, the adsorption isotherm characteristics of coal, hydrogeological conditions of effect and so on, the authors consider that the basin has abundant coal bed methane exploration foundation and the northern margin of Tiaohu-Malangng sag in Shuixigou Group is the preferred field for coal bed methane exploration.
