Volcanic rocks in the Shawotan-Hongyuquan area appear as lava along the Rola Kangri thrust zone and its south side in northern Qiangtang, Tibet. Volcanic activity occurred in Neogene with K-Ar and ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar age 2.5～8.76 Ma indicative of Late Miocene-Late Pliocene. The features show that the Neogene volcanic rocks in the Shawotan-Hongyuquan area of northern Qiangtang were produced in the post-orogenic tectonic setting, and their magma source stemmed mainly from partial melting in the lower crust.
