论刘易斯·芒福德的古代城市思想

摘要
刘易斯·芒福德是著名的城市理论家,他的城市理论对全世界的哲学家、历史学家、建筑师、城市规划师都产生了深刻的影响,而且依然适用于今天的社会。
芒福德认为,城市是文化的容器,而且这个容器所承载的生活比这容器更重要。本文选题的目的在于研究芒福德的古代城市思想,并试图通过对其理论的阐述,揭示城市文化对城市发展与规划的重要作用,进而说明芒福德古代城市思想对现代城市规划和建设的意义。
本文共分三章,第一章“芒福德的城市世界”主要介绍芒福德的个人生平及简介、芒福德的城市观,让读者对芒福德的一生及其学术成就、城市观有所了解。第二章“芒福德的古代城市思想”从他的三个理论入手,先通过对新石器时代的村庄的描述,揭示其城市生态理论的形成与发展,接着描述城市形成和发展过程中的磁体与容器功能及城市戏剧理论。这三个理论都与城市文化有着密切关系。其中城市生态理论为其后来的有机规划和区域观的提出提供了基础。后两个理论主要从城市功能的角度展开论述。第三章“芒福德古代城市思想的反思”主要是介绍其思想的理论意义和现实意义。
城市从无到有,从简单到复杂,从低级到高级的发展历史,反映着人类社会,人类自身同样的发展过程。磁体功能和容器功能在后来的城市中都很好地体现出来,原因在于这是人类最根本的需求。城市是社会活动的剧场,就是强调了城市的社会功能。人类文明所承载的文化滋养了一代又一代的人。然而,今天我们的城市却面临着诸多问题。尤其是在城市化的速度不断加快的情况下,城市的生态环境恶化,交通拥堵,人口过度密集,住房紧缺,资源枯竭等问题,亟待我们去解决。由此,城市规划过程中要重视两个问题:自然的破坏和城市生活的衰落。
因此,城市这个容器的职责不仅要为我们提供承载的空间,更应该在空间之内为我们创造出一个优良的滋养环境,满足人们社会和精神的需求。而在城市规划中,倡导生态文明,发展城市文化,建设人居环境是城市化进程中所要关注的课题。作为杰出的人本主义规划大师,芒福德的古代城市思想,也包括他关于现代城市的思想,对欧洲乃至世界都产生了重要影响,而对于今天正处于城市化进程中的中国更具有重要的现实指导意义。
Lewis Mumford is one of the most famous city of theorists. His theory of the city made a great impact to philosophers, historians, architects, urban planners, and is still applicable today.
Mumford asserted that the city is the container of culture, and the life of the container is more important than itself. The original function of the city is cultural accumulation and innovation, also communicating culture and educating people. To reveal the city culture played what important role in urban development and planning, this article will introduce and study the Mumford’s theory of ancient city. And further explain the importance of the Mumford’s theory to urban development and planning.
This article has a total of three chapters. The first chapter is“Mumford’s world of the city”. It will introduce the personal life of Mumford and his conception of the city,so to make the reader have a initial impression to Mumford and his academic achievement. The second chapter is“the Mumford’s theory of ancient city”. This chapter will introduce his three theories. Firstly, introducing the formation and development of his urban ecological theory by describing the Neolithic village. Secondly, introducing the function of the magnet and container in the city’s growing process. And then, introducing the urban drama theory. These three theories have a very close relationship with urban culture. His city’s ecological theory is the foundation of the lately organic planning and the regional concept. The last two mainly discuss the city’s function. The third chapter is“the reflection of the Mumford’s theory of ancient city”. This chapter is mainly about the theoretical significance and practical significance of his theory.
The city experiences one to grow out of nothing and from simple to complex, from lower to higher history. This process reflected the development of the human society and human self. The later city all expressed the magnet and the container function, for this is the most fundamental of human needs. The city is the theater of social activities, it emphasize the city’s social functions. The culture of human civilization nourishes generation by generation of people. But, for the acceleration of urbanization, our city faces many questions today, for example, the city’s eco-environmental degradation, the traffic congestion, the over-density of population, the housing shortages, the resource depletion…all this wait for us to do our best. Thus,urban plan must pay attention to two problems: urban ecological balance and environmental survival.
So, the container functions of the city should provide us not only the space but also the good nourishing environment to meet the people's social and spiritual needs. And so, in urban planning, we should pay more attention to these articles, such as promoting the ecological civilization, developing the urban culture, building the human settlements. As a distinguished urban planning master, his theory of ancient city and also his theory of modern city make a great effect in the Europe and even the world. I believe that his theory will play an important part in guiding the China’s urbanization.
