The genus Botryosphaeria comprises more than 200 names,of which only eight species,including the type species B.dothidea,have been confirmed based on DNA sequence data(Slippers et al.2004).The taxonomic status of all other species left unconfirmed because of lacking either morphological information or DNA sequences.In this study type specimens of B.aterrima,B.hamamelidis,B.mirabile and Melanops cruenta were obtained and reassessed in order to establish their correct identity.In addition,isolates collected during a survey of Botryosphaeriaceae on a variety of woody hosts in Heilongjiang,Shandong and Henan Provinces in China were identified.DNA sequence data of four nuclear loci,the ITS,LSU,tef1-α and TUB were used to characterize the type specimens and Chinese isolates.Based on the multigene phylogenies,B.hamamelidis,B.laricina and M.cruenta are transferred to Neofusicoccum,and the generic status of B.aterrima and B.mirabile within Botryosphaeria is confirmed.Neofusicoccum laricina,the causal agent of shoot blight and twig dieback of larch,were identified from Larix sp.in Heilongjiang Province in China.One novel species,B.rosaceae sp.nov.is described from China.Sequence data now confirms the presence of 11 species in the genus Botryosphaeria,namely B.agaves,B.aterrima,B.cortices,B.dothidea,B.fabicerciana,B.fusispora,B.mirabile,B.ramosa,B.scharifii,B.sinensia and B.rosaceae,of which B.fabicerciana,B.sinensia and B.rosaceae have been reported from China.
