The primary purpose of this dissertation provides a complete trekking guide of the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail from Kingsport, Tennessee, to Middlesboro, Kentucky. The trekker is given a view of the trails natural setting that describes the pattern of the road and its surfaces. In the section "Before You Trek" advice is given as to where to acquire information concerning the road and trail logo as a guide. The "General Information" gives further information about conditions of the road as to traffic patterns. "Hazards" is divided into two parts: "Man-made" and "Natural." The former concentrates on vehicular traffic and suggests trekking methods; whereas the latter tells about its wildlife: insects, snakes, bear, dogs and other smaller animals. "Planning Your Trip" suggests obtaining information and where to find it. This is followed with the essentials of trekking which includes clothing, gear, first aid, personal and miscellaneous items. This is followed with information pertinent to camping, overnight stays, and where to replenish supplies. "Historical Markers" deals with what and where they are; a numerical listing identifying each marker is included. There are biographical briefs of outstanding persons in the history of the roads development and brief notes as a comparison of the road to other famous trails. The roads origin extends back to 1610 with its actual construction coming about in 1775. The roads strategic position during the American Revolution and its importance during the Civil War are discussed at length. The "modern" era of the twenty-first century finds road improvements, vehicular traffic, railroads, and the boring of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel. There is a helpful table of distances from site to site and cumulative mileage of the entire route. Each site is identified as to its historic importance or as to acquiring supplies. *John Filson, “The Adventures with a Narrative of the Wars of Kentucke,” In Washburns Discovery, Settlement, and Present State of Kentucke 1784).
