A simple, one-pot preparation of cyclic amines via efficientchlorination of amino alcohols with use of SOCl₂ has beendeveloped. This approach obviates the need for the classicalN-protection/O-activation/cyclization/deprotection sequencecommonly employed for this type of transformation. Thereaction pathways and the general scope of this method havealso been investigated.
