Dietary carbohydrate excess induces circulating FGF21 8-fold in humans. Increased FGF21 was associated with increased hepatic glucose production and lipogenesis. The induction of FGF21 was associated with increased leg glucose uptake. The induction of FGF21 was accompanied by indices of lower adipose tissue lipolysis.
