Active terahertz metamaterials based on liquid-crystal induced transparency and absorption

An active THz LC metamaterial is experimentally investigated for THz wave modulation.

The resonance shift, tunable EIT and EIA are observed in the metamaterial under different DC intensities and directions.

The phenomena originate from interference and coupling of bright and dark mode in the metamaterial.

The modes are induced by LC which is indeed a tunable phase retarder and polarization converter.

The THz modulation depth of active EIT and EIA are 18.3dB and 10.5dB in their frequency band, respectively.
