A novel polymer latex (SDNL) for water-based drilling fluids was successfully prepared and characterized. SDNL could significantly improve the rheological performance of drilling fluids. SDNL had excellent ability to prevent shale hydration swelling and dispersion. SDNL possessed outstanding sealing performance by blocking pore throats and micro cracks of shale. SDNL might help to solve wellbore instability problems.
