Electrodialysis used to increase biohydrogen from continuous fermentation. Method allows long hydraulic retention times and is compatible with complex biomass. 37 g of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) removed and purified from liquid phase. 30 L of purified hydrogen produced over three, 48 h, hydraulic retention times. Hydrogen yields increased by a factor of 3.75 when VFAs are removed.
