Effect of pre-tensioning in single lap bolted joints in high strength steel was studied. An increase of fretting fatigue life with higher pre-tensioning levels was reported. Multiaxial criteria were employed in FE analysis to predict the initial crack location. Numerical results correspond well with the experimental results.
