Since its creation in 1977, CDTI (Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology) has consolidated as one of the key organisations in the promotion of Spanish technology development. Only in 1998, more than 400 national R&D projects were approved and the committed funds reached 171 MEURO. CDTI also manages the Spanish participation in the pan-European EUREKA programme since this programme was launched in 1985. EUREKA is a Europe-wide network promoting cross-border “market-driven” research and development (R&D) projects. EUREKA acts as an “enabling technology” helping participants to find the best way to co-operate. In this paper, the importance, evolution and future trends of the research in food technology on a national level are analysed. The same study is also carried out on an European level within the EUREKA programme. To achieve this, more than 450 approved projects from 1985 to 1998 are analysed. The current trends and the main lines of research for the Spanish food industry are indicated, as well as the most important areas for European co-operation.
