The influence of riverine input on the trophic ecology of sandy beach macrobenthos was explored. Macrobenthos assimilated estuarine organic matter only at the height of the wet season. The role of estuarine organic matter cannot be underestimated even when originating from a small estuary. Food availability was an important factor controlling the macrobenthos community. Macrobenthos exhibited overlapping trophic niches suggesting high level of inter-specific competition.
