Persons born in Mexico were exposed to DDT before the year 2000. p,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE in blood differed by country of birth. p,p′-DDT was associated with diabetic nephropathy among Mexican Americans. p,p′-DDT was also associated with diabetes without nephropathy. Relationships with p,p′-DDE may be due to a gene × environment interaction.
