Compaction porosity loss in the Mt. Simon Sandstone and underlying Argenta is normal in the sense that compaction generally increases with depth. Cementation porosity loss in the Mt. Simon is highest in the Middle and Upper Mt. Simon occluding primary porosity. Anomalous porosity in the Lower Mt. Simon is controlled by early clay coatings over detrital grains that inhibit authigenic quartz cements. Late post-compaction dissolution of feldspar in the Lower Mt. Simon increased porosity in the form of secondary moldic porosity. It is hypothesized that the Lower Mt. Simon and underlying Argenta were deposited in a rift style basin as opposed to a sag basin.
