Weathering of Silicate Minerals by Metabolites Produced by Silicate Bacteria in Culture Experiments

A strain of silicate bacteria was chosen to carry out a study on the microbial weathering of plagioclase by metabolites produced by the strain.The weathering progress and mechanism of microbial metabolite-mineral interaction was studied by measuring types and concentrations of microbial metabolites,analyzing densities of SiO2 and Al2O3 and mineral crystal structures in the process of metabolite plagioclase interaction.The results show that the strain can secrete amino acids,organic acids and polysaccharide in different media.In comparison with free mineral medium,the strain produced much more kinds and higher concentrations of metabolites in mineral weathering media.Each type of metabolites can decompose plagioclase.But polysaccharide is of higher effective on weathering plagioclase and releasing silicon and aluminum from plagioclase,as compared with the compounds of amino acids and the compounds of organic acids.The compounds of all kinds of metabolites have higher weathering ability than that of each metabolite.Weathering experiments show that the three kinds of metabolites have a certain synergistic effect on weathering plagioclase.
